Min Jin Lee's Writing Style

I've been appreciating Min Jin Lee's unique writing style as I've read Pachinko. I like her use of dialogue and descriptions; they aren't super flowery yet are interesting enough to get the reader to continue finishing the chapter. This book has been by far one of the most fascinating and comprehendible texts we've read.

Another thing to note about Min Jin Lee's writing style is her use of third person point of view. With this, she character jumps in order to tell her story and give the reader a slight glimpse into how other characters interact with each other. I think her conciseness in writing is unique as well. She spans through four generations and yet manages to keep the pacing of the book relatively fast. In all, I have enjoyed reading Pachinko the most. It's neat to see the Asian experience during that time period, because I feel like there isn't that much literature dedicated to those experiences for a Western audience.

  1. Hey Catalina! I was also impressed by Lee's descriptions. I feel like in previous English classes, every piece of literature we read would have those long, flowery descriptions, almost like poetry. It's refreshing to witness Lee stray from that tradition, and I wonder why she made that choice.
