Settler Colonialism Microlecture

In high school, I remember taking AP U.S History and therefore learning all about the indigenous presence in America, Native American history, and the resulting suppression of it with the influx of settler colonialism. However, I still found this particular micro-lecture to be eye-opening and a powerful refresher to what I have already learned.

I think the effects of settler colonialism are seen and reflected through all the characters, as they share a common theme of uncertainty and brokenness/figuring out where they stand with their culture that years of colonialism has shaped. I really thought Tommy Orange's comment on last names was enlightening because it was an angle that I had never heard of before, AP U.S History class and all. I think the implementation of last names is a monumental example of settler colonialism as whole identities were taken away due to this shift.

  1. Hey Catalina! Having not taken that class in high school, a lot of this information was knew to me. It is cool that you were able to bring in that background knowledge to this microlecture and reading. I found the last name section super interesting as well, it makes me wonder how many other things I never considered were changed by settler colonialism as well.
