Element of There There
During our class time on Thursday, Michelle brought up an interesting element to consider that honestly hadn't noticed before. That element was $14.91, which is referenced in the chapter where the boys try collecting money.
My blog prompt thus is this: What is the significance of Tommy Orange using that exact amount of money? Do you think there may be a potential connection to the amount of money and location/context in which the boys found the change?
Hi Catalina! I think Michelle mentioned this in class, but I thought it was super interesting! She said that 14.91 might be significant because it was the last year before Christopher Columbus (and other colonists) got to the Americas!
ReplyDeleteI know it has something to do with the fact that it is one before 1492, when Columbus came to the Americas, but I'm not sure what the significance of it being a year before is. The years up until then were the last years that the Natives were free from the shackles of colonization, and maybe the kids taking change from the fountains of nicer neighborhoods represents them reclaiming something important.
ReplyDelete1491 might be the last time the "there" was "there"... ?
