Research Excursions on Antigone!
With another book completed, comes another research excursion and being able to view our classes's work! It's always fun to see the different formats and topics researched so I'll get right into the ones I viewed.
First, I looked at Cassi's Neatline presentation on Ancient Greek Seers and Oracles. It was impressive to look at and I loved the way she categorized her information and reflected it on the map. In navigating her presentation, I learned that seers were considered advisors to the King as they could be used for political strategy. I thought it interesting to note that the popularity of seers declined during the Persian Wars. I was unaware that the shift in Athens to a more democratic form of government added to this decline in popularity as well. I especially appreciated the added information about the social status and female roles of seers.
The other research excursion I looked at was Monique's essay on Ancient Greek Burial Customs. In reading her research essay, I learned that the classical period in Greece marked a time for more public, elaborate burials. It was interesting to learn how the Greek's beliefs in the gods and the Underworld also not only shaped the way they prepared the body for the afterlife, but the way the person was mourned. Her research shows that the general fear of the gods caused the Greeks to take their burials quite seriously, which I noted a connection to a similar outlook see in Antigone.
I loved reading these two in depth and am pumped to explore more of the many other excursion projects!
Hey Catalina! I'm glad you liked looking at my Research Excursion! I found a lot of the same things interesting that you did-- I was excited when my source included information about women and how they differed from men in the same occupation, so I'm glad someone else enjoyed that aspect of the research as well! I didn't read Monique's essay, but it sounds super interesting. Based on your summary and what you learned, it definitely seems like something I should go check out! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHey Catalina, I looked at Cassi's neatline presentation as well. I also discovered that the seer were often advisors to the kings. You made some interesting observations!
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading my research excursion! I am so glad that you were able to have some key takeaways!
Hi Catalina! I haven't checked out either of those research excursion, so thank you for giving a brief description of both! I'm interesting to view them now! I had no idea that people feared the gods! I thought it was more of a respect and devotion to the gods, so that was new information to me. Good to hear that you are enjoying the research excursions!
ReplyDeleteHey Catalina! I haven't looked at these two projects yet, but now I definitely want to! When I was reading Antigone, I remember being unsure about how much Tiresias' opinion mattered to a king, but it seems like it mattered quite a bit. I also did not know that ancient Greeks' belief in the gods influenced the way they mourned. Thank you so much for your recaps!
ReplyDeleteHi Catalina, Monique's essay seems really interesting to me as well. I never really thought about how their belief in the Underworld affected how the mourned as well as how the body was buried.
