My Experience with Neatline!

Neatline. If I'm being completely honest, I found my experience with it to be kind of complicated because it was hard for me to get certain things to work initially. Personally, it was not a breeze to work, and it took me a long time before I could even create a demo of a map. I think this was mainly my fault though, because I'm not very tech savvy and I was also having connectivity issues as well. Once I was able to get the hang of it however, I found it to be a pretty cool tool. I had never thought of presenting information through a map, much less a digital one, so I found the concept of being able to explore a topic using the globe for context to be innovative and different (in a good way). The only part of Neatline that I found to be a pain was that I couldn't "search" in the map for the specific location I wanted. Instead, I had to zoom in and toggle around the area to find the precise location, which is a slight drag. Overall, I'm excited to use Neatline for future projects because I think it will bring a new perspective to whatever I decide to present on next. I am slightly nervous about using it again since I am not very well accustomed to the different settings and I would hate to mess up and therefore ruin my project. I'm also worried that I won't be able to recall all the steps on how to activate and navigate the tool, but I guess I'll leave that worrying until I decide to use Neatline next. Also, I know there are tutorials on the class Camino page to help me with remembering steps, so I shouldn't be too worried.

  1. Hi Catalina, I too struggled at first with Neatline. There is for sure a learning curve as the software seems a bit different compared to other softwares, but I'm glad to hear that you got a hang of it! I think using a map to explore locations in relation to a text is great way to visualize a text's setting(s) and put things into perspective a little. If you make a Neatline project in the future, I would be excited to see what you make!

  2. Hi Catalinia! I also had a hard time figuring out Neatline. It is really difficult to navigate and use. I was wondering what you planned on using it for? I really think it could help, but I don't see it fitting into my research process. Neatline seems like a cool tool, but I need ideas for how to use it!

  3. Hey Catalina! I agree that it was hard to figure out initially. I'm not sure if the software was just hard to use or if I'm just not tech savvy either. I think it is a unique idea for a project too, however I'm slightly confused on how in-depth it could be.

  4. I agree that Neatline seems to be pretty unintuitive for the most part, I don't think that part is your fault for not being tech savvy. There was no option to search using the map or even access the projects you made directly. Otherwise, I'm interested to see how people use it in the future.
