Music to my Ears
Like most teenagers, I am obsessed with music. I love the way it makes me feel and how it can improve my mood - and sometimes worsen it -just by the slightest variation of chords, style of music, and choice of lyrics by the artist. It's not out of reach to say that a majority of the time you'll find me with at least one AirPod in my ear, either when cleaning, cooking, or just even walking down store aisles. The music that most excites me are ones that aren't even from my current generation. For as long as I can remember, I have loved and been inspired by 50s, 60s, 70s, and even 80s music. To me, there is nothing better than hearing Billie Holiday croon a soulful song or listening to Elvis Presley on loop. As someone who has a strong appreciation for past decades of pop culture, there is something so very special when hearing music from another era. I can't put my finger on what it is, but I know I fell in love with "old music" when I first heard a Frank Sinatra album on vinyl as a young girl. By the way, I'm a strong believer that hearing an album on a record player (especially if the vinyl itself is worn and crackly) is the superior listening experience. Other than my oldies, my taste in music spans many genres. I love Lana del Rey, I adore musicals and it's one of my goals to attend many a Broadway show in the future. I'm also a big fan of movie soundtracks. There is a magical feeling that comes when experiencing the rush of a big orchestra, or the slow tug of a violin when in a cinema that aids in creating the movie experience. A great example of this is the soundtrack to La La Land, which I highly recommend. So whether I am needing a blast to the past, a Broadway belt, or emotional getaway, I know that I can always find comfort through music.
Hi Catalina! This is so cool! I agree, something about older music is so fun to listen to. Although, I do think that my preference is a little bit more recent than what you're talking about (my go-tos are Billy Joel, Elton John, etc.). I also love musicals (and La La Land!), what are some of your favorites?
ReplyDeleteHi Catalina! It's so interesting that you have such a unique taste of music! Not many people today can say that they listen to "old music" so it's great to hear that you listen to it still. A woman of culture. I actually have never watched La La Land, or listened to the soundtrack for that matter. What is La La Land about?
ReplyDeleteHey Catalina! My favorite part about your post was how to talked about the way music can improve your mood. Whenever I need a mood shift, I select music deliberately to help me start feeling the right energy. Sometimes I want something comforting, other times energizing, or maybe even nostalgic. Speaking of nostalgia, I must admit that I don't think I've ever listened to an album on vinyl. You've made me really want to try it!
ReplyDeleteHi Catalina, I think that's really interesting that you feel that connection to the past when you listen to old music. I totally agree with you. One thing in particular that especially gives me that connection is listening to my parents music. Imagining my dad rocking out to iron maiden in a garage in LA or my mom listening to old musical soundtracks in upstate New York really makes it feel even closer.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Catalina! Music has always been therapeutic for me, with an ability to get me ready for whatever I need to do. Whether it be the gym, work, school, or chores, music has my back no matter what. I think it's also cool that you enjoy older music! Frank Sinatra is a personal favorite of mine, but I also love 80's because of my mom. As for your opinion on vinyls, I have to say I agree. I have made it an (expensive) habit to buy albums I love in vinyl!
ReplyDeleteHi Catalina! I, too, am obsessed with music! Although I don't listen to older music like you, I, too, appreciate the drastic impact music can have on my mood. My Spotify is filled with playlists fit for any mood. If you asked my parents they would tell you that, while at home, I'm constantly listening to music. Whether I'm walking the dog, baking, or just cleaning dishes, I have to be listening to something. While that used to be music, I've recently discovered Spotify's vast collection of podcasts! If you like podcasts, I'd love to get your opinions on some :)
ReplyDeleteHi Catalina! I totally agree. I will always be listening to music during any mundane task. It always just makes the chore feel that much more fun. Another thing I love is listening to it while working and driving. Driving to great music is especially therapeutic for me. I, too, love "older" music; especially music from the 70's. I am a huge Micheal Jackson and BeeGees fan! Soundtracks are really fun to listen to, as well. My younger brother loves theater so we'll always be listening to musical soundtracks in the car together. Awesome post!
ReplyDeleteI will definitely have to try listening to albums on vinyl! I think it would be great to not feel like I have to change the song constantly! I’d also love to know your favorite musicals! One of my favorites is Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat!
ReplyDeleteHey Catalina! I can't say I've tried listening to albums on vinyl. That'll have to be something I try on my free time. I strongly agree that music can sway your mood one way or another. I think it's important to listen to types of music that encompass all of the moods that define a person.
